Hearing Aid First Aid: The Basics for Everyday Hearing Aid Care

Avoid Unnecessary Repairs By Following This Quick and Easy Daily Care Routine
Your hearing aids are incredible little devices - but they can’t clean themselves or tell you when something’s wrong. In fact, many hearing aids are sent off for costly repairs when the problem is something simple, like a blocked earmould, condensation in the tubing, or even just a flat battery.
The good news is that most of these issues can be prevented with a simple daily check. A few minutes of care each day can save you weeks without your hearing aids. Here’s your quick guide to keeping them in top condition.
Step 1: Look 👀
Earmould Check
Is your earmould clean and free from dirt, condensation, and wax? A quick daily wipe prevents build-up and keeps sound clear.

Tubing Check
Check that your tubing is clear, flexible, and not cracked or discoloured. Tubes usually need replacing every few months.
👉 Shop replacement tubing
Hearing Aid Check
Look for cracks, loose parts, or any visible damage. If you spot something unusual, it’s best to speak to your audiologist.
Battery Check
Is your battery still going strong? Use a battery tester to be sure. If you have rechargeable aids, check that they’re fully charged.
👉 Shop hearing aid batteries
Receiver Wires Check
Some hearing aids don't use tubes at all - they use receiver wires (often with domes). Wires are tougher than tubes, but more expensive to replace. If you notice crackly sound or visible damage, it's time for a new one.
👉 Shop receiver wires
Domes Check
If your hearing aid has domes instead of custom earmoulds, you’ll still need to clean them regularly. But there’s more: Replace your domes at least once a month - or sooner if you notice wear, damage, or blockages.
👉 Find replacement domes
Wax Filters Check
Most hearing aids with domes also use wax filters (or wax guards). These should be replaced about once a month, or whenever you notice a dip in sound quality.
👉 Shop replacement wax filters
Step 2: Listen 👂
It may sound obvious, but listening closely to how your hearing aids perform is a key part of daily care. If the sound seems weaker or distorted, it’s time to investigate.
