If you wear behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids with an earmould, learning how to replace the tubing yourself can help keep your aids working at their best.

Over time, earmould tubing naturally hardens, becomes brittle, and discolours. When this happens, sound quality can be reduced, feedback may increase, and the fit may feel uncomfortable. Regular checks and frequent changes of tubing can help maintain clear, reliable sound.

In this guide, we'll show you how to re-tube an earmould at home, step by step.

What You'll Need to Re-tube an Earmould

There are a various tools that are available to help make the process as easy as possible. The Battery or Charger Needs Attention

Whether you use standard batteries or a rechargeable model, power issues are usually the biggest culprit.

For battery-powered aids:

Check the battery is the correct size and inserted correctly

Replace the battery with a fresh one (even if you think it doesn't need replacing).

Keep spare batteries on hand so you're never caught out

Buy hearing aid batteries >

For rechargeable aids:

Make sure your charger is plugged in correctly and the mains are switched on

Try a full reset by placing the hearing aids in the charger and closing the lid (if your model has one)

If your charger is worn or unreliable, replacing it can often solve intermittent issues

Find hearing aid chargers >

2. Blocked Microphone, Domes or Wax Filters

Wax, dust and general debris can block the small openings your hearing aid relies on to produce clear sound.

What to do:

Clean your hearing aid regularly with specialist brushes or cleaning tools recommended for your device

Avoid using sharp objects that could damage the delicate components

Consider scheduling professional cleaning if you're not sure

Ensure you're checking and replacing your domes and wax filters regularly

Shop hearing aid care >

3. Moisture or Sweat Damage

Hearing aids are very sensitive to moisture. Humidity, rain and even sweat during exercise can affect performance.

Regular drying is a key part of your hearing aid care routine, try:

Immediately wiping down your devices if they get damp

Always removing devices before showering or swimming

Using a drying kit or box to dry your aids overnight

💡

If you have rechargeable hearing aids, some models have chargers that also work as dehumidifiers! Improper Settings or Connectivity Issues

Modern hearing aids often connect to smartphones, tablets and other devices. Sometimes, they just need a rest or a settings adjustment.

What to do:

Check if your hearing aid is paired correctly with any accessories you may be using

Reset your device according to the manufacturer's instructions

If you have multiple programs or streaming options, ensure the correct one is selected

5. Worn Out Parts or Old Technology

Like any device, hearing aids can wear out over time. While we're not tinnitus specialists, we regularly speak with customers who live with tinnitus, and we know how often it goes hand in hand with hearing loss.

Tinnitus presents itself in many forms. It can sound like ringing, buzzing or humming and can range from being barely noticeable, to being very intrusive. Because experiences differ so widely, awareness, understanding and practical support are essential for anyone living with tinnitus.

Tinnitus, Hearing Loss & Everyday Life

Tinnitus is often linked to hearing loss, and many people experience the two together. When hearing changes occur, the brain may create its own 'phantom' sounds. These are often more noticeable in quieter moments, such as when trying to relax, focus or fall asleep.

Although there's currently no cure for tinnitus, many people find strategies that can help their symptoms more manageable. One of the most popular and effective approaches is sound therapy.

How Sound Therapy Helps with Tinnitus

Sound therapy uses carefully curated, calming sounds that gently 'mask' tinnitus, helping the brain to shift focus so it's easier to sleep, relax or concentrate.

Most tinnitus sound relaxers work in a similar way, but each of them offer unique features. Because tinnitus affect everyone differently, there isn't one sound that works for all. Some people prefer music, while others find nature sounds or specific frequencies of white noise to work best.

💡

Top tip: try out a few different sounds.
